The Holy Father Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop David Louis Walker of Broken Bay. The Bishop turned 75 on 13 November 2013.

One of six children in a close-knit family, Bishop Walker spent his childhood in the eastern Sydney suburb of Clovelly. He was educated with the Sisters of St Joseph and with the Marist Brothers at Randwick, and attended the Seminary at Springwood and Manly.

Family life will be the focus of an extraordinary general session of the Bishops that will meet at the Vatican from 5 – 19 October 2014.

Catholics from every diocese around the world are invited to participate in a questionnaire on the many challenges facing the family today and how the topics (covered in the questionnaire) affect their daily lives. The questions asked include such topics as: the Church’s teachings on the family, marriage, pastoral care in difficult marital situations, family evangelisation, same sex unions, family planning and openness to children.

Congratulations to the newest priest in the Diocese of Broken Bay, Fr Vincent Trung Nguyen, who was ordained to the priesthood  on Saturday 26 October 2013 by Bishop David Walker at the Cathedral in Waitara.

Fr Vincent completed his journey to priesthood, after just recently being ordained deacon in early September. He is now assistant priest at Chatswood’s Our Lady of Dolours Parish.

Advent is a time of joyful anticipation as we await the arrival of the Christ Child. Advent is a time to prepare hearts and minds, and to reflect and contemplate this amazing event, but it can be difficult to do within a world which is rushing into a holiday season with an overriding message of commercialisation and selfish consumerism.
