On Friday 8 April, His Holiness Pope Francis presented a landmark Apostolic Exhortation on the definition of family entitled Amoris laetitia - The Joy of Love: The Love of the Family.

The document draws on the long history of Church teaching and brings together the results of the two Synods on the family convoked by Pope Francis in 2014 and 2015.

Last year we reflected deeply on the 100th anniversary of ANZAC Day, and as always, all men and women who have given their lives in service, including suffering and death.This year we begin the second hundred years of keeping their memory alive, of giving witness to their sacrifice, and of passing that witness on to the next generation.

These are important things to honour year after year, keeping the Australian and New Zealand promise to “remember them.”

Sister Helen Prejean, the real life nun whose story featured in the Oscar winning film Dead Man Walking, will be a special guest of the Diocese of Broken Bay via Skype on 7 May.

Sister Helen will be in conversation with Fr David Ranson, Vicar General, about the “Consistent Ethic of Life”, which centres on the Church’s pro-life perspective at all stages in the human lifecycle, from birth to natural death. The Consistent Ethic of Life honours the inalienable dignity attached to all life, both ‘innocent’ and ‘guilty’.

Nearly 50 men gathered at Kincumber Parish during March to take part in Men Alive weekend. A team of parish men led by Gerry Shields recruited, welcomed, set up and catered for the weekend, while a team of presenters led by Robert Falzon led the process and gave the teaching and testimonies.

On Sunday 3 April, St Agatha's Parish, Pennant Hills hosted a wonderful celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday with an afternoon of Liturgy and prayer, including Mass, Reconciliation, recitation of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, readings from the Divine Mercy Novena, Veneration of the Divine Mercy Image and Benediction.

There's nothing compassionate or safe about killing our fellow travellers along the journey of life.

Accepting euthanasia means agreeing some people are beyond any help, for whom taking their life is the only option. I reject that pessimism. I reject the idea that euthanising someone is any sort of solution to the deeply human reality of facing our own mortality.
