My dear people,

Today as I attend World Youth Day celebrations in Kraków, the homeland of Saint John Paul II, I am deeply aware of the great pain and sadness of the people of Europe as the terrible news of violent activities seems to meet us ever more frequently.

The most recent in Rouen, France, has been particularly heinous in its nature; the violent death of a loved and elderly Parish Priest and the critical wounding of parishioners in a sacred place.

World Youth Day in Sydney changed the landscape of youth ministry nationally, the Australian bishops said during a national gathering of Australian pilgrims currently participating at World Youth Day (WYD) events in Krakow, Poland.

Yesterday, the Australian Bishops joined more than 3,000 young people at a national Australian gathering during WYD Krakow that included a launch of the ‘Year of Youth’, building on the legacy of World Youth Day 2008 (WYD08).
