Welcoming the
ROMAN
MISSAL
THIRD EDITION
The Roman Missal is the large book used at Mass and contains the prayers of the Mass
On 25 March 2010, a new English translation of the Roman Missal was approved in Rome. The Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference will select a date, probably in 2011, for parishes to commence using the new text.
Different words! Same Mass!
The way the Mass is celebrated will not change. There will be some changes to the responses and prayers which we use at Mass. For example, when the priest greets the people saying, 'The Lord be with you', the people will respond, 'And with your spirit'.
There will also be changes to the words of the Gloria and the Creed. Many of the prayers said by the priest will follow more literally the original Latin from which our English prayers are translated. Revised music will be used for the parts of the Mass
This year, in June, the priests of the Diocese will begin studying the new texts, growing in understanding of the best way of leading the assembly as we worship at Mass.
The Diocesan Liturgy Commission will be making resources available to help parishes learn about the new translation and deepen their understanding and experience of Sunday Eucharist.
Keep informed by following notices in Parish bulletins.
…..deepening...nurturing...celebrating…..

Restoration of Communion from the Cup.
-
Recently, the Department of Health has given a rating level of “protect” to the status of the H1N1 Influenza Virus pandemic. In this situation, major concerns are to protect those who are susceptible because of age or health. Furthermore over recent weeks a vaccine has been made available and will be part of a public health program of inoculation.
-
In view of these developments, Bishop David has advised that the distribution of Communion with the Sacred Blood be restored as common practice in the Diocese as from the First Sunday in Advent, 29 November.
-
Please take appropriate measures such as inoculation. Please note that isolation of infected persons is a key method of control. Clean hands and clean surfaces are major safeguards against the spread of flu-type infections.
Advice for distribution of Communion.
-
Ministers should use an anti-bacterial hand sanitizer.
-
All communion vessels are to be purified and then washed in warm soapy water.
-
All are encouraged to receive the sacred host on the hand.
-
Parish practice should endeavour to distribute hosts consecrated at that Mass.
-
Recognize that intinction (dipping) by the person receiving the host is not acceptable either as an approved practice or as hygiene practice
-
The General Instruction indicated that each communicant should “drink a little”. Receiving the Sacred Blood therefore should involve drinking rather than just touching the wine with the lips.
-
Ministers are to wipe the rim (both sides) with the purifier, using fresh section of the purifier, and turning the cup before offering it to the next communicant.
From the Liturgy Office,
Parish Support Unit.
Diocese of Broken Bay

Knowing our liturgy!
Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under both kinds” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 281)
Why is this so?
1. By eating and drinking we acknowledge the Eucharistic banquet.
“in this form the sign of the Eucharistic banquet is more clearly evident.”
2. We follow the direction of the Lord to “take and drink.” “clear expression is given to the divine
will by which the new and eternal Covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord.”
3. It reflects the relationship between Mass and the banquet of eternal life. By drinking of His cup
“heaven and earth are one”.
