What are the responsibilities of the employer?

  • An employer must obtain from employees who have or who may have unsupervised contact with children confirmation that they are not prohibited persons.
  • An employer must not employ anyone without evidence that he or she is not a prohibited person.
  • Place all completed returned confirmations in a secure and confidential area within the parish facilities.

Outline of CCD Authorisation Procedures

A new Special Religious Education teacher before entering the classroom will need to:

  • Complete document: A1 - Contract
  • Complete document: A2 - Department of Education and Training Declaration
  • Obtain a Working with Children Check (a prerequisite for anyone in paid or voluntary child-related work in NSW) by completing an online application form at www.newcheck.kids.nsw.gov.au  

Once correct paperwork is processed, the catechist will receive the following cards:

  • Provisional Authorisation Card (Yellow card - valid until the end of the current year) 
  • Upon completion of the CCD Ministry Induction, the Provisional card is exchanged for a Full Authorisation Card (Green card - automatically re-issued annually)

An SRE observer or visitor entering the classroom:

  • According to the Office of the Children's Guardian, a visitor for a one off occasion (up to five days in the year), such as a speaker, performer or assessor, is exempt from obtaining the WWC Clearance.  This is on the condition that this person is in the presence of one or more other adults when in contact with the children. 
  • If it is expected that a visitor to the SRE classroom will attend more regularly they must follow the same procedure as a new SRE teacher and obtain a Provisional Authorisation Card prior to entering the classroom.

Assistance available from CCD / Diocese

  • Provision of information about the Act and its implications for Parishes in the Diocese;
  • Provision of ongoing in-service / information programmes to update Child Protection material;
  • Assistance for Individuals who may require clarification about their position under the Act;
  • Assistance for Parish groups (e.g. catechists) in liaising with outside bodies (e.g. Government schools) to clarify authorisation procedures;
  • Implementing procedures to ensure the security and accessibility of signed declarations;
