Diocesan Social Justice

Social Justice in the Diocese of Broken Bay is made up of a variety of social justice groups in and around parishes and their local communities which embrace Catholic Social teaching in ways which serve the needy, work for justice and pursue peace whilst being signs and safeguards which uphold the dignity and rights of every human person.

In Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis acknowledges Social Justice in seeking “ as a community, creative ways of accepting a renewed call to Spiritual Conversion”; whereby “the intensity of the love of God and neighbour, zeal for justice and peace, the Gospel meaning of the poor and of poverty, are required of everyone.” [EG 172]  In hearing and heeding Pope Francis’ call to justice across the Diocese of Broken Bay there exists projects and programs which create awareness, action and participation in response to this call and as a constitutive element of the preaching of the Gospel.

Our Mission is “to pursue the teaching of the Church and the mission of the Gospel in areas of social justice including advocacy and support for the underprivileged groups in our society.”

In upholding our mission statement, the Diocese works with other official mission aid agencies of the Catholic Church namely Caritas and Catholic Mission whilst maintaining communication with local, state and national justice and peace entities particularly the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council.

The Catholic Life & Faith Formation team assists diocesan clergy, laity and parish groups on social justice matters and practices. If you are organising Social Justice initiatives in your local parish, feel free to pass on your information to Cristina Gomez, email cristina.gomez2@dbb.org.au, so diocesan networks can share and be encouraged by your efforts.

The Diocese of Broken Bay supports a Social Justice Network known as SJ Around the Bay (SJAB) sjaroundthebay.org. This network, set up in February 2009, encompasses individuals and groups from parish communities who come together quarterly to communicate social issues, to share stories and experiences about social justice works and projects. Their website offers to help network in the Diocese whilst not being of the Diocese, information and updates of social realities and challenges.

If your parish initiative is to start a Parish-based Social Justice group, downloadable resources are available for free through www.msjn.org/home/social-justice-handbook. This resource is also ideal for current Parish Social Justice Groups to revisit as foundational formation.
