In 2006 attempts were made to start up a Social Justice Group in our parish. While we were able to inspire some interest, numbers were poor so a decision was taken to amalgamate with the Terrigal parish group, whose numbers also were not as we would all hope.
We work on an arrangement where we hold the monthly meetings alternately in each parish.
Meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month at 7pm.
During 2006 we undertook a public discussion and forum on the use of drugs in schools, at which our own Fr George spoke as a Catholic high school chaplain, and psychoanalyst. As well we held a Christmas Day Lunch for about 30 lonely people who wouldn't be sharing that special meal with anyone else.
One of our big endeavours in 2007 was to fund raise for one of our parishioners from Nigeria who has been unable to afford the travel expenses for his family to join him in Australia. St Joseph's Catholic College and St Edward's College assisted in this as part of their social justice programme, and the parish supported a raffle in support of the cause.
It is interesting to note that many parishioners who completed the National Church Life Survey reported they were proud of how our parish approaches Social Justice issues, but unfortunately the reality is that we could do more, much more than making sure we contribute to appeals to help the underprivileged and disadvantaged.
Why not come along to our next meeting – become active – become accountable!
