St. Patrick's Parish [including Somersby, of course] has had a Pastoral Council for over 20 years with both elected
members and group representatives. The Council meets once a month.
The Pastoral Council consists of the Parish Priest and his Assistant, together with a group of parishioners chosen
by the Parish Community. The use of the word 'Pastoral' emphasizes that the focus of the Council is people. Its
role is primarily pastoral and not administrative, managerial or financial.
The Pastoral Council carries out its role by:
-
Being a representative body rather than a body of
representatives.
-
Adopting a listening and receptive attitude towards the
community.
-
Exploring the needs, hopes and gifts of the community.
-
Praying and reflecting on these needs, hopes and gifts
so as to discern the distinct areas of mission for the community
and the gifts of its members.
-
Proposing, in dialogue with the whole community, a pastoral
plan with practical steps and priorities to match members' gifts
with these areas of mission.
In doing this, the Pastoral Council accepts a collaborative role in the leadership of the Parish.
