students learning about art
The subject matter of K-6 Creative Arts is organised into four interrelated content strands: Visual Arts, Music, Drama and Dance.

Creative Arts is planned to enable students to gain understanding and expertise in the visual arts, music, drama and dance. It also supports students’ appreciation of the meaning and values that each of the artforms offers personally, culturally, spiritually and as forms of communication. By teaching Creative Arts we aim to integrate faith, culture and lived experience through the celebration of liturgical dance, music, art and drama. Students develop confidence and develop an appreciation of performance and creativity.

Learning in Creative Arts is important for our students because it:

  • encourages an understanding and valuing of oneself and others
  • provides opportunities for personal expression, enjoyment, creativity, imagination, emotional response, aesthetic pleasure and creation of shared meanings
  • provides opportunities to explore social and cultural values about spiritual and worldly beliefs and to celebrate, share and negotiate these values and beliefs
  • helps learn the ‘literacy’ needed in Creative Arts to understand the meanings of symbolism used by each of the art forms to communicate and exchange ideas about the world
  • assists students in interpreting certain aspects of the world in their works, in innovative and creative ways.
