OLHC students meet Prime Minister Kevin Rudd

Students from Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic School, Epping, along with Principal Kevin Turner, met Prime Minister Kevin Rudd last week at the opening of local Federal member Maxine McKew’s new office in Epping.

OLHC were invited to the opening together with long term residents of the local area, members of the Chinese community and local business owners. OLHC presented Ms McKew with flowers.

“It was a great experience for the students to meet Mr Rudd,” said Kevin Turner. ”The year 1, 2 and 3 children were asked by Mr Rudd, ‘What is good about Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic School, Epping?’ and the students eagerly responded, ‘Everyone looks after each other and we play fairly’.”

Mr Rudd was also interested in the progress of the ‘Building the Education Revolution’ (BER) work being done at the school. Mr Turner thanked Mr Rudd and his Government for their support in implementing the program and both Mr Rudd and Mr Turner agreed that this was a much needed injection into schools across Australia.

Mr Rudd paid tribute to the work of Mary MacKillop, after the announcement that she will be canonised by Pope Benedict XVI in October. “It’s a great honour for Australia and the Australian Catholic Church,” said Mr Rudd. “It’s a great tribute to her work in education and a great honour for Australia itself.”
