'Come On Kids' is a 'virtual classroom' in myclasses to connect academically-able students from a number of schools in Broken Bay Diocese. It consists of a 'virtual teacher' and an active online community of students from K - 4 who communicate using Journals, Notice Boards and email. (Currently at OLOR, we are trialling the program with students from Year 2 and Year 4.)
The students complete numeracy tasks to enrich 'Working Mathematically' outcomes with a different focus each term. These activities are written in ELFs (E-Learning Folios) and involve web based games and Learning Objects. The students are required to complete work and submit it to nominated teachers at the end of each term.
The students have access to the 'Come On Kids' web site in class for two sessions a week of about twenty minutes each. These sessions will replace a class activity, not add more workload. Students will also be able to access their work at home supported by their parents.
The majority of communication will be in the virtual environment, although students will receive some face to face support. Student participation and achievement will be reported back to class teachers at the end of the term. We hope to see our students achieving beyond their age and stage through motivating and engaging activities.
