School Representative Sport - Carnivals
Each year OLOR holds three major carnivals (Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals) for the whole school to participate in. Even the earlier grades such as Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 have modified activities that are implemented on the day of these carnivals so they feel like they are part of the action. These activities are made fun and enjoyable for all early stage students and are implemented so that children can familarise themselves at a young age of what these types of carnivals are like.
Students that perform well at any of the 3 annual carnivals (swimming, cross country and athletics) will be selected to progress to the next level of competition. This continues through a series of carnivals all the way to Nationals where only the best students in Australia compete. The way in which these carnivals progresses is as follows:
OLOR School Carnival à North Shore Cluster Carnival à Diocesan (Broken Bay) Carnival à Polding Carnival à State (PSSA) Championships Carnival à National Championships
School Representative Sport – Winter and Summer Sports
Students can also try-out for a variety of winter and summer sports throughout the year which consist of representing the Broken Bay Diocese. This is where the best students within the Central Coast, North Sydney and Northern Beaches regions (Broken Bay) get together to try-out in the hope to be selected to attend the Polding try-outs.
The winter and summer sports that talented students can try-out for include:
Winter Sports: Girls/Boys Soccer, Girls/Boys Hockey, Girls Netball, Boys Rugby League, Boys Rugby Union and Boys AFL.
Summer Sports: Girls/Boys Tennis, Girls/Boys Basketball, Girls/Boys Softball and Girls/Boys Cricket.
If a student is successful during the Polding try-outs, they will then be selected to proceed to the next level which will include training in a state team of their chosen sport.
Gala Days
OLOR tries its best to offer its students as much sporting opportunity as possible. Other than its annual carnivals OLOR offers students a number of gala days in which they must try-out for during PE lessons. The gala days available include:
· Soccer
· Netball
· League Tag
· And Basketball
Students must meet a set criterion in order to be chosen for a gala day and students can only attend 2 gala days a year so that all students have the chance to represent their school in different sporting events.
Overall, gala days brings our local North Shore Catholic schools closer together, which gives OLOR children the opportunity to experience team work, fitness, enjoyment, sportsmanship and fair play in a number of different sports.
