Pastoral Care is based on respect and dignity of the human person.
Pastoral Care grounds the school’s Mission Statement in the quality of our daily relationships. The ways in which people interact with each other in the daily life of the school significantly affects each person’s sense of well-being, identity and self-worth. Everyone in the school community has a responsibility to foster quality interpersonal relationships amongst teachers, students, parents, support staff, priests and parish communities.
OLR endeavours to provide to all, the experience of high quality interpersonal relationships of care and support. Thus each member is both a provider and recipient of Pastoral Care.
As a school community, OLR responds with increasing sensitivity to the social and cultural diversity of its members. It is in and through Pastoral care that much can be done to promote, respect and support such things as diverse family structures, different ways of giving expression to Christian faith, and awareness of cross-cultural issues. School policies and practices are respectful of the dignity, rights and fundamental freedoms of individual students and provide learning opportunities for individual students which are responsive to their unique needs for growth and fulfillment.
Programs which promote and assist positive social interactions and behaviours at OLR.
Peer Support
The focus of the program is based around belonging to our school community and engaging in positive social interactions, with a major component being anti-bullying strategies. For a period of time in one school term, the children are placed in multi–age groups where the Year Six students act as group leaders while teachers facilitate and supervise our peer support program.
Buddy System
The aim of this program is to promote a feeling of welcome, belonging and safety for each kindergarten child whilst in their first year of school. Year Five students are ‘buddied up’ with a Kindergarten student on their arrival at OLR. Throughout the year opportunities are provided for the buddies to socialise and work together.
Playgroup
This group is provided to assist pre-school children have a smooth transition into kindergarten at OLR the following year. The program is overseen by the Principal and facilitated by volunteer parents. During the playgroup session the children are introduced to school practices, rules and playground areas.
Each child attends once a week between August and November. These sessions provide opportunities for the children to familiarise themselves with the school.
Seasons for Growth
Loss and grief are issues which affect all of us at some stage of our lives. Learning to deal effectively with these issues is important for personal well-being and happiness.
Unresolved grief can also affect a student’s learning. Our Lady of the Rosary offers a loss and grief peer support program called Seasons for Growth, which supports participants who have experienced change in their family because of death, separation or divorce. The program explores issues such as change, managing feelings, coping strategies and support networks.
