Mathematics pervades all aspects of our lives - as citizens, in our homes and in the workplace. Through learning mathematics at St Cecilia’s, students will work towards the acquisition of mathematical skills and knowledge enabling them:-
- to deal confidently and competently with daily life
- to become numerate and mathematically fluent
- recognise the fundamental importance of mathematics to the functioning of society
- understand and appreciate the nature of mathematical thinking, the processes
- use technology appropriately and effectively to support the learning of mathematics, and in carrying out mathematical activities in context.
- All students at our school will study a rich and interactive sequential Mathematics course based upon the Curriculum set out by the Board of Studies.
- A Mathematics and Numeracy coordinator will be appointed at the beginning of each year.
- Numeracy teaching and learning will comprise of a numeracy block where a combination of Daily Number Sense, specific teaching and independent/group work occurs.
- The course will be exciting; will have an emphasis on a diverse range of ‘hands on’ and practical real-life activities, numeracy and the development of numerate students.
- The course will involve mastery of mathematical tools such as calculators, and the use of computers for modelling, calculating and the delivery of mathematical activities.
- Students will be required to work as individuals, as well as with others to resolve problems.
- Student’s individual abilities will be pre-tested, and learning opportunities (including intervention programs) will be provided that cater for the identified needs of each student.
- Student progress in all strands of Mathematics will be reported in half and end of year academic reports.
- Mathematics study for each student will be not less than 5 hours per week.
- Adequate resourcing and professional development opportunities will be provided.
