The Active After School Sports Program (AASSP) is a government funded national initiative that provides primary school-aged children with access to free, structured physical activity programs in the after-school timeslot of 3.30pm to 4.30pm. The program aims to engage traditionally non-active children in structured physical activities and to build pathways with local community organisations, including sporting clubs.
At St Cecilia’s programmed activities are designed to encourage participation, fun and social interaction with the overall purpose of targeting those children who do not participate in regular organised sports. Children who do not regularly participate in organised sport will be given preference under funding guidelines.
Each term the AASSP invites children in grades K-6 to participate in a fun after school sports program. The program runs straight after school on two afternoons per week for 7 sessions.
The Australian Government through the Australian Sports Commission has risen to the challenges of modern society by developing a structured physical activity program, which engages Australia’s children in the right environment at the right time. Children stay within their secure school or OSHCS environments alleviating many of the issues associated with unsupervised after school activities.
The cornerstone of the AASC program is the involvement of the local community in the delivery of the program. This involvement will offer opportunities to support and strengthen community cohesion and development.
