As a school community we believe that one of the primary aims of St. Cecilia's is the development of individuals who are capable of self-direction, of choosing freely, intelligently and responsibility in accordance with their conscience. In brief, we are committed to the fostering of authentic self-discipline.
The Pastoral Care Policy for Diocesan Systemic Schools states that:
Pastoral Care
- has as its focus the life of Jesus.
- is concerned with the dignity and integral growth of the person.
- is a responsibility entrusted to all members of the faith community.
- is a force for healing, reconciliation and liberation.
- is an expression of and commitment to justice.
(Diocesan Schools Board – Diocese of Broken Bay, August 2000)
We believe that school, as a preparation for life, should foster the development of self-discipline and self-knowledge and assist each person to grow.
We believe that pastoral and disciplinary practice should assist in the development and maintenance of self-esteem. Without love of self, we cannot love God, nor can we love each other.
We believe that the school staff should have realistic expectations of each child according to his/her age and stage of development.
We believe that parents should be an integral part of the pastoral and disciplinary life of the school. At no time is any form of corporal punishment to be used.
St. Cecilia’s School Discipline Policy takes into account the:
- Beliefs underpinning the Pastoral Care Policy of the Diocese
- Age and stage of development of the students
- Capacity of students to understand what is required of them and the reasons for this
- Need for ongoing pastoral advice to students
- Partnership with and participation of parents
- Collaboration between the school and the parish
- Effects of physical and psychological welfare of students
- Responsiveness to students with special needs
- Improvement in the quality of teaching and learning
- Legal rights and responsibilities of teachers, including the duty of care of students
- Rights and responsibilities of students
- School processes in place in the event of breaches of discipline
There are a range of policies and programs in place to ensure that this aim is achieved.
These include:
