INTEGRATED CURRICULUM
At St Kevin’s School we believe children’s learning should be integrated to enable the children to transfer their knowledge from one subject area to another and to make connections between their learning and their ‘real-world’ knowledge. We believe an integrated curriculum supports and caters to the varying learning needs and styles of all students.
High interest and high engagement, as well as deep learning and understandings take place through our Integrated Units. These are based on the Key Learning Areas of HSIE or Science and Technology and are integrated with English, Creative Arts, PDHPE and Mathematics.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
Proficiency in academic language is crucial to achieving successful learning outcomes in all areas of the curriculum. The ESL teacher works with the classroom teacher to assist students in becoming fluent in academic language.
Many students at St Kevin’s School have attended school in Australia since they commenced kindergarten but also continue to speak or be exposed to their parent’s first language at home. Because they are not hearing adult language being spoken at home, they are all to some degree disadvantaged with their English language development and need explicit language support to cope with the academic demands of each key learning area (KLA).
The ESL teacher supports students and teachers in the classroom by providing models, scaffolds and structured communicative activities to enhance student’s oral and written expression. The content of programmes incorporates vocabulary and language features students will need to use across the KLA’s in the classroom.
LEARNING NEEDS
Special Needs / Learning Support
The Learning Support teacher works collaboratively with the classroom teachers and parents. The Learning Support team at St Kevin’s Catholic School aims to identify student learning needs as early as possible and to plan and implement appropriate programs. When necessary, the Learning Support team may also facilitate the referral process to other professionals and/or develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) to assist students in accessing the mainstream curriculum.
One element of Special Needs / Learning Support is for those children who are identified as ‘gifted and talented’. St Kevin’s School is involved in a number of in house and wider community learning projects to help meet the needs of these children.
ABORIGINAL PERSPECTIVE
We are very conscious of the Aboriginal heritage of our place. An Aboriginal perspective is embedded in everything we do at St Kevin's. The school shares elements of Aboriginal lore as a basis for building community:
Relationship - with staff, children, families, parish and visitors;
Respect - for each other, our motto, our school and our environment;
Responsibility - for our actions, our learning and our environment;
Ritual - in gatherings, ceremonies and liturgies;
Reverence - for ourselves, each other, all creation and our God.
Each class at St Kevin's has adopted a Garigal name to describe the agreed character and aspirations of the group.
Our class names are:
Yarraman - Kinder - 'Super Pony Riders'
Ngiyang Nyanga - Year 1 - 'We all learn together as one'
Ngaliya - Year 2 - 'We as one mob'
Wana Gulang - Year 3/4 - 'Flying Stars'
Yudi - Year 5/6 - 'Servant Leaders'
