The Human Society and Its Environment Key Learning Area of study that the students learn about at St Kevin's Catholic School is guided by the NSW Board of Studies and the HSIE K-6 curriculum.
Learning in this Key Learning Area is supported by the allocation of approximately two hours per week for students in Years K-6 to develop of their skills in:
- identifying the interactions of people with one another and with the social, cultural and physical environments;
- applying Catholic beliefs to decision making; and
- acquiring knowledge and understanding.
St Kevin’s School makes use of Integrated Units to teach all the outcomes of Human Society and Its Environment. These Units focus on one or more of the four strands of HSIE – Culture, Change, Environment and Social Structures and integrate the other Key Learning Areas of Science and Technology, English, Creative Arts, PDHPE and Mathematics. We feel that this integration offers richer learning experiences and allows for children to develop much deeper understandings, as well as maintaining high engagement and powerful real world connections.
