This key learning area of study is informed by the Broken Bay K–12 Religious Education Curriculum.

The religious development of the children is central to the Catholic school. It seeks to contribute to the formation of the children as disciples of Jesus within the Catholic tradition, recognising its contribution as part of a lifelong process.

Our Religious Education Curriculum identifies the Catholic school as a place where students are offered experiences of Catholic discipleship and suggests ways that schools can promote those experiences in everyday school life.  This syllabus describes the Aims, Objectives and the expected Outcomes of classroom Religious Education in the Diocese of Broken Bay.

The Religious Education curriculum has three components: the Foundations section which explores the context of religious education and the call to Catholic discipleship, the Syllabus itself and the Modules which are resource packages assisting teachers in the development of units of work. They contain the expected outcomes and provide Biblical and Catechism references to support the teaching of the topic. As well, they provide theological and education background and suggest ways contemporary pedagogy can be incorporated into the teaching of Religious Education.

The Religious Education curriculum is consistent with other Key Learning Areas in that it is outcomes-based. The children’s performance is assessed in a manner consistent with other Key Learning Areas. Students’ achievements are then communicated to parents during half-yearly parent/teacher/child interviews and within the First and Second Semester Reports.

Two and a half hours each week is spent on Religious Education.

Liturgical Life

Liturgies celebrated are meaningful to our St Kevin’s Community.  The involvement of students, parents, staff and sometimes parishioners is evident in our celebrations.  Students participate in a variety of prayer forms such as meditation, formal and informal prayer.  A deep appreciation of prayer in a respectful and reverent way is an integral part of life at St Kevin's.  Parents are always welcome during class prayer or liturgies.

School, Parish, Diocese

We strive to develop strong links between the school and parish.  Students are involved in parish Family Masses each term.  There is an open invitation each Thursday at 8.30am for families to join the Principal or Religious Education Coordinator in the parish Eucharistic celebration.  Classes often attend the 12noon parish Mass on Friday.  The school supports parish initiatives such as the making of Christmas hampers. Parishioners are invited to appropriate school events and are kept informed about school news through the Parish Bulletin.  The school supports the parish-based sacramental programme through the implementation of modules of work from the Religious Education Curriculum, the use of a classroom for group sessions and the attendance of staff members at the celebrations of the sacraments.  Our school participates in Diocesan initiatives such as: the Staff Mass at the beginning of the school year, Year Six Cluster Mass and the Mission Mass.
