Parent Education
At St Kierans we are proud of the parent education program we offer our community.

Early in the year a course titled K-2 Parent education in Literacy is offered to all parents. It is an extensive 8 hour course, consisting of 4x2 hour sessions covering reading and writing in the curriculum. Parents learn some basic theory around how children learn to read and write as well as tips to help their child at home. The course qualifies a parent to be a volunteer helper in the classroom during literacy.

Parent Education is also offered in some format at every P&F meeting. The Principal, Assistant Principal or other members of staff present information to the parents around current curriculum initiatives in the school.

Other forums where parent education is offered are: the beginning of year information night for parents in each grade, parent orientation program for new kinder parents and the term open days in each grade where classrooms are open to parents to view a particular area of the learning.

Parent Help in the Classroom

Parents are invited to share their interests and talents in the school by supporting the teachers. Teachers value this support, however, it is the teacher who is the professional in the areas of curriculum and learning. For effective parental help, observations about an individual child, small groups of children or the whole class must remain strictly confidential.
