To ensure a smooth transition into school, new Kindergarten children are paired up or buddied with a child from the Year 6 class. The younger children meet their buddies during the Kindergarten orientation process in the previous year when the older children are in Year 5.
A small number of children in the new Kindergarten class who have been identified as having behavioural or emotional needs will be paired with specific older children. Aside from these considerations, the rest of the children are matched randomly. During the first few weeks of the school year, the Kindergarten children are assisted by their Year 6 buddy to establish routines around the school, social orientation and to act as a general hand to the teacher.
The Year 6 children are encouraged to act as a friend to their Kindergarten buddy and to help them establish their place within the school.
