Serving as a Disciple

A Way of Being

…confident that the Kingdom of God is among us.

Contemplative Process

With Christ’s gift of the Spirit and his assurance that ‘the kingdom of God is among you’ Luke 17:21, we open our hearts and give God space to act within, among and beyond us. We live in hope and place our trust in God as we continue to pray ‘your kingdom come;’ a kingdom of peace, right-relationships, justice, forgiveness, compassion, peace and joy.

Scripture Passages

“Pray then in this way:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we have also forgiven our debtors.
And do not bring us to the time of trial,
But rescue us from the evil one.

Matthew 6:9-13

Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered, “The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed; nor will they say, “Look here it is!” or “There it is!” For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you”

Luke 17:20-21

He also said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come”

Mark 4:26-29

People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it”. And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

Mark 10:13-16

Let us therefore no longer pass judgement on one another, but resolve instead never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of another. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. If your brother or sister is being injured by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of for whom Christ died.

So do not let your good be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The one who thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and has human approval. Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

Romans 14: 13-19

Questions for Reflection

  • When have I experienced that the “kingdom of God is among us?”
  • How can I give space for God to act?
