Leading as a Disciple

A Way of Being

...in relationship with Jesus Christ and faithful to God’s mission.

Contemplative Process

In Jesus Christ, God’s mission of love is revealed. In making God’s love known Christ draws us into his relationship with the Father and leads us to let God’s mission be the focus and inspiration of our lives. This is what St Paul means when he says we are ‘in Christ’. Through Baptism we are so embedded in Christ that our whole lives are lovingly turned to the service of God. From within this relationship we love as Christ loves, and thereby make God’s mission of love concrete in our daily lives. To live into this relationship IN CHRIST- FAITHFUL TO GOD’S MISSION is the bedrock of Christian discipleship and the source of Christian leadership.

Scripture Passages

No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known

John 1:18

“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge; and my judgement is just, because I seek to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me”.

John 5:30

I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:5

As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

John 15: 9-10

As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.
‘I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

‘Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.’

John 17:18-26

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’ He said to him the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’

Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.’ (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, ‘Follow me.’

John 21:15-19

And it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20

As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:27-28

Questions for Reflection

  • In what ways does my relationship with Christ inspire me to allow God’s mission to be my focus?
  • What does this inspiration offer to the exercise of leadership in the Christian community? What examples of this do you see in the scripture passages?
